Anyone for a curry night?

Watford North Scout District is holding a Curry Night in support Hertfordshire Scouts Capital Appeal and Lees Wood.

The Curry Night will be held at the award-winning Forest of India in Abbots Langley on Tuesday 13th March.

The meal will cost £15 per head, and will include a starter, main and side dish (vegetarian and non-Indian alternatives are also available). Menus will be sent out once you have booked.

Subs increase to £3.50 per week

At the Group AGM in June we raised the issue of the Group’s finances and the need to raise subs from the current £3 per week.

It is with great reluctance that we have to increase subs to £3.50 per week in 2012.

There are two main reasons why we are forced to implement this increase:

1. Since the subs were last increased in January 2006 our running costs have more than doubled.

2. The imminent substantial increase in our ground rent from £7.50 to £600 per year.

We are currently negotiating a new lease with Watford Community Housing Trust and one of their conditions is the substantial increase in our rent. The rent hasn’t changed since the original lease started in 1968 so some increase is to be expected.

We appreciate that this will not be welcome in the current climate but unfortunately we have no choice.

We hope that you will understand that this increase in subs is unavoidable that we are keeping this to the absolute minimum. You are also reminded that subs are required every week even if your child is unable to attend.

We are also reliant on fundraising as well as subs in order to continue Scouting so if you have any new ideas please contact the Group Chairman, GSL, or see any of the Leaders.

A pioneering weekend

Last weekend, the Scout section held a Parent and Scout camp at Lees Wood camp site. One of the main activities of the weekend was pioneering, and as one of activities we built a swing out of pioneering poles, as you can see below.

There was a good turnout of both Mums, Dads and Scouts for the weekend and a great time was had by all.

Swinging back into Scouting

The summer break is over, and we at 9th North Watford are back Scouting for a new term.

The Scout section is back with a Scout and Parent camp this weekend, and Cubs and Beavers start back on Monday 12th September. Please see the calendar for more dates.

AGM and BBQ onMon 27th June

This year’s AGM will be held at the Scout Hut at 7.00 pm on Monday 27th June 2011. All are welcome.

This is our opportunity to inform you what the Group has achieved in the last year and our aspirations for the future. The official business should be completed within half an hour with the opportunity for you to ask questions or raise any issues of concern.

We will also be having a barbecue, making use of our new hard standing area.

There will be an opportunity to talk to committee members and Leaders on a more informal basis after the meeting.

St George’s Day Parade 2011

The 9th North Watford Scout Group attended the annual Watford North St George’s Day Parade on Sunday 17th April. Several hundred Beavers, Cubs and Scouts from across the District attended the Parade and service, including a large number from the 9th, and the service this year was provided by the 1st North Watford Scout Group and focused on “team work”.

Sainsbury’s Active Kids vouchers

We are again collecting Sainsbury’s Active Kids vouchers. We can use these to get a wide range of equipment for use by the Beavers, Cubs, and Scouts in our Group.

If you shop in Sainsbury’s, or know someone who does, you can bring in the Active Kids vouchers and we can use them to help us improve the quality of Scouting that we provide. We have done very well the last two years, but let’s see if this year can be a record breaker!

Night Owls 2011 results

Each year, Scouts in Watford North take part in the Night Owls competition, involving orienteering and night-time exercises and bases. This year, along with the more traditional scouting bases of tent pitching (but blindfolded), building a tower, tying a clove hitch (but around a tree) and cooking twists over an open fire, one base even included sewing on a button!

Our team had a great time and came 7th.

Don’t raise our rents!

The Scout Association has launched a campaign to oppose unreasonable rent rises by local authorities. Scout groups play a valuable and active role in society. Each year volunteers in Scouting give over 37 million hours of their time to their communities – and the 9th North Watford give more than our fair share!

We at the 9th are facing a rent increase from £7.50 to £600 from Watford Community Housing Trust.

Please go and sign the petition to keep our rents at a fair level.

Scouting in the new year

All sections have returned for an action-packed new year!

Cubs and Scouts should have received programmes at a section meeting, and these are also available in the members section of the website (please contact your section leader for access details).

We always have a lot of Scouting going on at the 9th North Watford, as we have an excellent and dedicated leadership and executive team – but we can always use more help! Please speak to a leader or committee member if you would like to get involved!
